I pre-ordered this cover when I purchased my Kindle 2 about a month ago and it is definitely worth the wait. I opted for this 2nd Gen cover over the other brands and versions offered for two reasons: 1) it utilizes the hinge holes on the left side of the Kindle device for the most secure fit and 2) there is a strap to keep the cover closed. Other models I looked at utilize 4 elastic straps at the corners to keep the Kindle 2 in place. Despite even the most careful efforts, elastic will eventually stretch out and people will be clumsy: if your Kindle was to be dropped in one of the other cases, I guarantee it will fall out of the case on the way down at some point. The strap is a second line of defense for my Kindle 2. It keeps the case securely closed and wrapped around my device protecting the screen and edges, especially when be being jostled around in my oversize purse :)

As far as the quality and craftsmanship are concerned, the case is extremely well-made, very slim and does not add much bulk to the slender Kindle. The suede lining inside the case is very smooth and there are a few mini pockets for scraps of note paper and/or business cards. I personally have not used this since it would cause paper — and not the suede lining — to brush up against my Kindle’s screen when the cover is closed. There are no odd fragrances (although I think this comment refers more to the case’s faux leather cousin). The camel color is modest and understated and not overly orange in tone. Lastly, there is a decent amount of space between the left side of the Kindle 2 and the cover’s spine when closed. I believe this is intended to house the not-yet-released 2G M-Edge e-Luminator reading light (hurry up already, M-Edge!) but it is also helpful if you prefer to bend back the case’s cover for one-handed reading. Overall, the case is a great compliment to my snazzy new Kindle 2!

Very nicely made Kindle2 cover. I did not find that this had any unpleasant odors (as mentioned in other reviews). The cover seems sturdy (it must have a book board between the leather & suade for shaping). I think it could protect a Kindle from a mild to slightly severe drop. I particularly like that the closure is secure PLUS you can fold the cover over backwards and use the closure to secure it open – for easy one handed holding. The leather is nice quality and the interior seuade-ish fabric will prevent scratches. The interior pockets don’t have any depth – so may not hold anything other than a little note paper — which is fine, I wouldn’t want anything to rub up against the kindle. Great for travel or commuting. I will post any new thoughts once I have used it several months – that will be a truer test of quality.

EDITED UPDATE 6.17.09: Still in good shape. This item is showing some signs of wear (and I am very careful) and will most likely need to be replaced in a few years, especially with lots of use.
